What Is Hair Transplantation?

Hair transplantation encompasses procedures that aim to restore lost or thinning hair with the patient’s own permanent hair follicles, which continue to grow, look, and feel natural. Hair is removed from donor areas (typically the back and/or sides of the scalp) and moved to the front hairline, temples, mid-scalp, top of the scalp and crown of the scalp which are called the recipient areas. The hair that is transplanted will continue to grow for the person’s lifetime as this donor hair is considered permanent and is not subject to hair loss. A typical hair transplant procedure can involve 800 to 2500+ hair grafts depending on the extent of hair loss.

Hair Harvesting Techniques

The first step in hair transplantation is harvesting the hair follicles by FUT, FUE or robotic-assisted FUE with each technique having its own benefit. The choice between each technique will depend on the patient’s goals, the amount of hair loss and the plan for hair restoration.

FUT (Strip Method – Follicular Unit Transplantation)

  • A thin strip of hair (and scalp) is removed from the back of the head and separated into individual hair grafts.
  • FUT harvesting can cover a larger section of hair loss.
  • It results in a linear scar
  • Recovery is longer and tends to be more painful
  • Because of the scar, patients may not be able to wear shorter hair styles.

FUE (Individual Extraction – Follicular Unit Extraction)

  • Individual follicles are extracted from the scalp manually and are prepared for implantation into the frontal hairline and thinning recipient areas.
  • There are only tiny white invisible scars. There is no linear scar.
  • Recovery is faster with less pain than FUT
  • Time- intensive – It can take a long time to perform manually.

Robotic FUE

  • Individual follicles are extracted from the scalp using robotic AI technology
  • There are only tiny white invisible scars that are randomly placed in the donor area avoiding overharvesting thus creating a natural look in the donor area, There is no linear scar.
  • Recovery is fast with minimal plain
  • Procedure takes less time and is faster

What Is the Best Technique for Hair Transplantation?

Hair restoration technology has advanced to a point where many of the drawbacks of earlier techniques are greatly improved or eliminated entirely. Robotic hair transplantation is considered the superior state of the art option over traditional methods offering the most advanced form of hair restoration available today. Robotic hair transplantation uses AI (artificial intelligence) technology, 3D stereoscopic imaging and precision robotics for precise, accurate and efficient results.

The benefits of the Robot::

  • AI- guided precision
  • Natural hairline design
  • Natural-looking results
  • Precise hair follicle selection
  • No overharvesting
  • Improved graft survival
  • Faster procedure than alternative methods
  • No linear scar
  • Minimal downtime
  • No post-operative limitations on physical activity
  • Ideal for both men and women

Using the Artas robot for your hair transplantation decreases the risk of human error and fatigue and increases the precision and accuracy of the hair transplant procedure delivering consistent, highly predictable results.

What Is Robotic Hair Transplantation?

ARTAS® Robotic Hair Restoration

The ARTAS® robotic hair transplant system is a minimally invasive procedure that uses AI to deliver precise, natural-looking results without leaving a scar.

The objective of the ARTAS® system is similar to that of traditional FUE, except that image-guided robotics analyzes and selects the best follicle grafts from the donor site and then accurately identifies the optimal placement for best results in the recipient area. It leaves the donor site natural looking, avoiding overharvesting or a thinned patchy look to the donor area. The recipient area will have a natural hairline and look with optimal density.

How Does the ARTAS® Robot Work?

The ARTAS® robot hair transplant system is the most advanced hair transplant therapy. Using artificial intelligence, 3D treatment planning software, and precision robotics to harvest follicular units, the ARTAS® creates customized, natural-looking recipient sites for follicular unit implantation.

How Is Hair Transplantation Performed?

Hair Transplant Procedure Steps

Hair transplantation involves three parts.

  1. Harvesting the number of hair grafts from the donor area required to meet your goals as part of the hair restoration plan.
  2. Preparing the hair grafts for reinsertion in your scalp or implantation. This is usually done under illumination with a microscope.
  3. Implanting hair grafts with precise angle, depth, and direction back into your scalp in the recipient areas which is usually the frontal hairline, temporal recession areas, front of the scalp, mid scalp and crown (vertex).

The ARTAS® robot system uses 3D imaging, AI analysis and advanced algorithms to select the most viable hair follicles for transplantation and maps a natural-looking hairline and growth pattern for implantation. The robotic hair transplant procedure is performed under local anesthesia in the state of the art hair procedure room in the office.Your scalp will be numbed with local anesthesia for your comfort and supplemented with light oral sedatives if necessary.

ARTAS® robot with the AI technology will read the hair follicles and select the ideal hair follicles in the donor area for harvesting. The required number of hair grafts will be taken to meet your goals and the surgical plan whether that be from 800 to 2500 or more as discussed with Dr. Lo.

The hair grafts are then prepared under a microscope for implantation.

The ARTAS® device will scan your scalp, and Dr. Lo will map out your hairline and the recipient areas such as the front of the scalp and crown to give you a natural beautiful result

Your hair transplant procedure can take 4 to 8 hours to complete depending on the extent of your hair transplant procedure ie.the number of hair grafts. You are very comfortable during your procedure and there are food and bathroom breaks during your procedure.

Why Should I Have Robotic Hair Transplantation?

Robotic hair transplantation takes the guesswork out of follicular unit extraction, offering more precise and accurate harvesting. In addition, the robot maps out a precise plan for implantation giving you a customized, natural-looking result. One of the major drawbacks of traditional hair transplants is the time it takes surgeons to painstakingly remove and replace hair follicles. The robot dramatically reduces this time, improving the patient experience and aesthetic results.

What Are the Benefits of ARTAS® Robotic Hair Transplant vs. Conventional FUE?

ARTAS® Robotic System Conventional FUE
Greater precision and consistency in harvesting and implantation Human error due to fatigue, imprecision and variability of hand-eye coordination
Optimal graft selection Manual graft selection
Increased graft survival and reduced damage Decreased graft survival and increased graft damage
4–8 hours 4–10 hours or more

Am I a Candidate for a Hair Transplant?

If you are tired of seeing a receding hairline, temporal hair loss and/or thinning, balding hair that seems to progress every time you look in the mirror, you may be a candidate for hair transplantation. Ideal hair transplant candidates:

  • Have stable (at least six months) hair loss
  • Have an area of sufficient donor hair
  • Have realistic expectations for results
  • Are healthy adults
  • Have male or female pattern baldness, or hair loss due to scarring or injury

Call to arrange a consultation with Dr. Lo and his team to determine if you are a good candidate for a hair transplant procedure.

A robotic hair transplant can be performed on any healthy adult that is a candidate for a hair transplant.

Hair Restoration Recovery & Aftercare

After your hair transplantation procedure, there will be some tenderness in the scalp. You will be given specific instructions on how to protect your newly transplanted hair follicles. You will need to be gentle as they “anchor” themselves onto the scalp, which should take about three days. There will be small scabs at the transplant site, do not pick or scratch them off. They will fall off on their own. Most patients will cover their scalp with a loose fitting baseball cap during the early healing period.

You can safely resume most daily activities after about two days. You can gently wash your hair two days after your procedure, but do not dislodge the scabs. Dr. Lo and his team will provide you with specific instructions on caring for your newly transplanted hair and when you can safely resume regular activities. Avoid strenuous exercise for 2 weeks.

Expect some swelling, redness, and crusting for about one to two weeks, followed by shedding of the implanted hair, known as “shock loss”, your transplanted hair will begin to show growth in about 3 months with results at about 9 to 12 months. Your donor site will quickly heal in 2-4 weeks and will be barely noticeable.

What Results Can I Expect From Hair Restoration?

Newly transplanted hair takes time to fully grow in. The transplanted hair enters the early healing and growth stages in the first three months after the procedure, when the hair follicles take root. Over the next four to six months, you’ll begin to see new hair growth as fuller, thicker strands emerge and become more substantial throughout the transplant area.

At about 7 to 12 months after your initial procedure, you can see the final results of your robotic FUE treatment: thick, healthy hair that grows in a natural growth pattern and looks exactly like your natural hair—because it is your hair!

Non-Surgical Management of Hair Loss: How to Maintain Your Transplantation Results

It’s often recommended that patients pair their hair transplant procedure with other non-surgical techniques to foster healthy hair growth, reduce shedding, and maintain results.

There are medications such as minoxidil that help stimulate hair growth and increase follicle diameter. Finasteride is another option, commonly paired with minoxidil, inhibits the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into DHT, which causes hair loss.

Vitamin supplements and special shampoos are also great additions to your non-surgical hair restoration regimen as they stimulate the scalp and prepare it for healthy hair growth, increase vital nutrients needed for hair development and more.

PRP for Hair Loss

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections into the scalp for hair loss involve drawing the patient’s blood and processing it to separate platelets, which contain proteins and growth factors that stimulate hair growth and promote a healthy scalp environment. This process is highly effective for treating early hair thinning or helping to maintain the results of hair transplantation.

  • What are the causes of hair loss?

Hair loss can occur for any number of reasons, including:

    • Genetics
    • Hormonal changes
    • Medical conditions
    • Stress

The primary cause of hair loss that hair transplantation treats is the most common: genetics, or male/female pattern baldness. Other causes can be treated with medication or stress reduction.

  • How long does the robotic ARTAS® procedure take?

The robot is much faster and more precise than traditional methods, which, depending on the size of the thinning area, can take anywhere from 4 to10 or even 12 hours, and sessions are often split into two separate visits to account for the length of the treatment.

The ARTAS® robotic system is much faster, averaging four to eight hours for a moderate-to-large thinning area to be treated with hair transplantation.
