Male Breast Reduction or Gynecomastia Correction

The appearance of the chest is important to many men. The goals for this area can vary from person to person. There is often an area of excess tissue and fat on the chest underneath the nipple area. This can be present despite intensive chest exercises and dieting. The medical term for this condition is called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia (Greek for 'women like breast') is actually very common, affecting 40-60% of men. Many men seek correction of this condition.

Most often, the cause of gynecomastia is unknown. In many cases, the excess tissue appears in adolescence and persists. Many men have been told that this condition will go away with time only to be disappointed. Male breast reduction surgery may be the only option to permanently remove this excess breast tissue to achieve a normal chest contour. After surgery and with proper exercise, the outline of the pectoralis muscle will become more apparent.

Dr. Lo takes a tiered approach to contour and sculpt the male chest area. Depending on your individual needs, Dr. Lo may recommend the following:

  • Liposuction - Many chest contouring and sculpting problems can be solved by liposuction alone. Dr. Lo makes a small one-third of an inch incision in each armpit to perform lipocontouring of the chest area. He uses the Tumescent technique routinely in all his patients to minimize bruising, swelling and pain. Dr. Lo also offers Ultrasonic liposuction in select patients who need more extensive contouring. Certified in the ultrasonic technique, Dr. Lo has found this technique useful in providing the patient with a superior result. In addition, Dr. Lo is experienced in PAL or power assisted liposuction which he also uses to achieve maximum contouring of the chest area.

  • Surgical Contouring of the Chest - Often called 'subcutaneous mastectomy', this surgical technique involves making an incision in the areola below the nipple and removing the chest tissue. In certain situations, Dr. Lo may recommend this procedure in place of liposuction to achieve chest contouring especially if the chest tissue is more glandular in nature rather than fatty. Dr. Lo reserves this technique for the more severe cases. In the vast majority (over 90%), Dr. Lo can achieve excellent contouring by the three techniques of liposuction - tumescent, ultrasonic and PAL.
The procedure is performed in the safety and sterility of the hospital. The patient goes home the same day. A chest binder is worn for two weeks. Most patients are back to work in 1-2 days.
