The Rhinoplasty Experience - What to Expect from the Day of Surgery to the Final Result
Your Rhinoplasty Surgery
Your rhinoplasty surgery is performed in the hospital as an outpatient procedure. You arrive at the hospital about 1 hour before the procedure. Prior to the surgery, Dr. Lo will meet with you and draw on your nose the proposed improvements.
The anesthesia team including the anesthesia doctor will make you comfortable during the procedure with twilight sedation or a full general anesthesia. The procedure takes about 1 to 1½ hours. After you wake up in the recovery room and when you are comfortable, you will be allowed to go home with your family member, friend or caregiver. Specific post-operative instructions will be given.
Recovery and Healing from Rhinoplasty Surgery
To protect your nose after rhinoplasty surgery, you will wear a splint on your nose for 5 to 7 days. There may be a small amount of packing in your nose and a small bandage underneath the tip of your nose. You will use ice packs to minimize any discomfort. You will rest your head in an elevated position to minimize swelling. Most patients have minimal pain and require pain relief medications for only a few days. The swelling and bruising usually resolves in 7 to 10 days.
Your first scheduled visit back to see Dr. Lo will be in one week after your Rhinoplasty surgery. At that time the splint is removed. You will see your new nose immediately except for the tip of the nose where swelling may take an additional month to resolve. The final result of your surgery may not be apparent for 6 months or more.
Most patients return to work or school in about 1 week. Normal activities and exercise are resumed in 2 to 3 weeks depending on the speed of your recovery.
Results of Your Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal to feel a bit anxious while you are adjusting to your new look and profile. However, you will begin to enjoy your new look right after the surgery and in the weeks and months that follow. You will feel more confident with your improved nasal shape that is now in balance and harmony with your face.
