Male Breast Reduction or Gynecomastia Correction
The appearance of the chest is important to many men. The goals for this area can vary from person to person. There is often an area of excess breast tissue and fat on the chest underneath the nipple area. This can be present despite intensive chest exercises and dieting. The medical term for this condition is called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia (Greek for 'women like breast') is actually very common, affecting 40-60% of men. Many men seek correction of this condition.
Most often, the cause of gynecomastia is unknown. In many cases, the excess tissue appears in adolescence and persists. Many men have been told that this condition will go away with time only to be disappointed. Male breast reduction surgery may be the only option to permanently remove this excess breast tissue to achieve a normal chest contour. After surgery and with proper exercise, the outline of the pectoralis muscle will become more apparent.
Dr. Lo takes a tiered approach to contour and sculpt the male chest area. Depending on your individual needs, Dr. Lo may recommend the following:
- Liposuction - Many chest contouring and sculpting problems can be solved by liposuction alone. Dr. Lo makes a small one-third of an inch incision in each armpit to perform lipocontouring of the chest area. He uses the Tumescent technique routinely in all his patients to minimize bruising, swelling and pain. Dr. Lo also offers Ultrasonic liposuction in select patients who need more extensive contouring. Certified in the ultrasonic technique, Dr. Lo has found this technique useful in providing the patient with a superior result. In addition, Dr. Lo is experienced in PAL or power assisted liposuction which he also uses to achieve maximum contouring of the chest area.
Surgical Removal of the Breast Tissue - Often called 'subcutaneous mastectomy', this surgical technique involves making an incision in the areola below the nipple and removing the breast tissue or cutting out the glandular tissue. In many situations, Dr. Lo may recommend this procedure to achieve chest contouring especially if the breast tissue is more glandular in nature rather than fatty. Dr Lo believes that a proper assessment will determine whether you have glandular tissue requiring surgical removal of the glandular tissue. Often liposuction is performed at the same time to sculpt and contour the chest.
The procedure is performed in the safety and sterility of the hospital. The patient goes home the same day. A chest binder is worn for two weeks. Most patients are back to work in 1-2 days. The incision or cut on the areolar usually heals very well so that you do not see the scar.
It is strongly recommended that you call the office to arrange a complimentary consultation with Dr. Lo to assess your individual situation to determine what's best for you.
Puffy Nipples-Dr Lo's surgical technique will remove puffy nipples. The nipple/areolar area will be smoother, flatter and smaller after the surgery. If your actual nipple is large, this may also be reduced or made smaller.
Loose Skin-If you have loose skin on the chest that may not contract or shrink after surgery, then Dr Lo will remove skin at the time of your first surgery. If you have loose skin from a previous surgery, then Dr. Lo can perform another procedure to remove the skin.
Male Breast Reduction-If you have severe gynecomastia, then a breast reduction procedure may be recommended. The breast tissue and skin are removed in one surgery. This will involve a circumferential cut around the nipple/areaolar and a cut along the crease of your chest. During your consultation with Dr. Lo, he wil recommend what's best for you, to achieve the best look for your chest.

Does Gynecomastia Surgery Hurt?
"This was by far the best decision I have ever made. Growing up I was overweight – thus developing breasts and when I lost all of my weight at the age of 21, I still couldn’t get rid of the excess tissue that developed on my chest. After regularly working out and going to the gym for over 9 years with no improvement to that area, I did some research and went to Dr. Lo’s office for a consultation after reading some positive reviews online. Dr. Lo was very thorough during my consultation and walked me through the entire process while providing realistic expectations, timelines, and risks. It didn’t feel as though he was reading from a book and talking at me, he actually cared about my personal goals and expectations while determining the best path forward. After the initial visit I was extremely nervous, but after 9 months of continued research/web boards/pictures/videos/horror stories/etc I called the office and decided to go through with it! Prior to surgery, Dr. Lo will have you for a re-evaluation and his staff makes sure you are fully prepared (schedules/supplies/etc). The day of surgery Dr. Lo goes over everything one more time and makes sure you are comfortable and ready for the procedure, he even called me at home that night to make sure I was feeling okay and if I had any questions. The open and consistent communication is definitely what put me at ease for this operation and opened up my trust to both the Dr and staff.
I am now 72 hours Post-Op and I feel great! I had the surgery Monday morning – it is now Thursday and I am back at my office (60 min commute via train). After having other surgeries in the past I was nervous this was going to be as bad as them, but it was nothing in comparison. After surgery, I didn’t feel much pain (didn’t use the meds) but it definitely was uncomfortable given what I had just been through - with that being said, the more I started moving around – the more comfortable I became. I was walking around my house unassisted within 6 hours and in 48 hours I was back at the office getting my drains removed. After the drains were removed I definitely felt more comfortable and was able to be more active around my place/ neighborhood. It is now day three and I am still swollen as that will go away with time, but other than that I don’t feel much of anything especially wearing my compression garment but am taking it easy as not to overexert myself/ and pull the incisions,. I am worlds better than I thought I would be after reading all of the blogs - the only thing I wish I had done differently would be doing this sooner and I can’t wait to see the long term results!"-- M.S./Surgery June, 2016
