How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon for your Breast Augmentation Surgery

  1. Is your Plastic Surgeon Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons (ABPS)? You are able to check your Plastic Surgeon's Certification on the American Board of Plastic Surgeons website at www.plasticsurgery.org. Does your plastic surgeon have additional certification by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery? How many breast augmentation procedures has your Plastic Surgeon performed? Does your Plastic Surgeon offer you options on the type of incision and implant?

  2. Does your Plastic Surgeon listen and understand your goals and objectives? Is your Plastic Surgeon willing to have a frank discussion with you about your goals and how realistic they are for your individual situation? Beware of high pressure tactics and the pressure to schedule your surgery immediately. Beware of a surgeon who offers you "perfect" breasts.

  3. Look at the before and after pictures. Are all the breasts the same size or is there a good mix of B, C, D's? Someone who operates on many different types of breast situations will likely be able to deal with your situation. Are there any 'After' pictures that have a result similar to your desired goals?

  4. Ask your Plastic Surgeon how long the incision will be. There are many surgeons who make long axillary, periareolar and crease incisions. Other surgeons make these cuts as short as possible.

  5. Will your Plastic Surgeon be available and accessible after the surgery for questions and concerns or will you talk to a nurse? What is the office policy for redo's or touch-ups?

  6. Do you like your Plastic Surgeon? Is the office staff helpful and pleasant to deal with? Does the entire office seem to want to make your surgical experience a positive experience? Trust your instincts.

  7. Don't choose your Plastic Surgeon based on cost of the surgery. Like most things you buy, there will be a low price and a very high price; most reputable Plastic Surgeons are somewhere in the middle or average for your area. Beware of a very low price as there may be hidden costs; like most things in life, you get what you pay for. Avoid high pressure sales tactics such as asking you to place a deposit before leaving the office.

  8. Ask your Plastic Surgeon if it would be possible to talk to other patients that have had breast enhancement surgery. Previous patients can give you an indication of what the Plastic Surgeon and his office are like and can also share with you their breast augmentation experience.
